Joachim Treusch receives Arthur Burkhardt Prize

   

On April 25, Joachim Treusch, President of Jacobs University, was awarded the Arthur Burkhardt Prize 2007. The Arthur Burkhardt-Foundation for the Advancement of Science thereby recognized Treusch’s outstanding and successful commitment in promoting Public Understanding of Science as well as his innovative contributions to steering science and research in Germany. Endowed with 10.000 euros the award was presented by Hannelore Windthorst, daughter of Arthur Burkhardt, and Ernst-Ludwig Winnacker, secretary general of the European Science Council.

“With unique power of persuasion and vitality the visionary Joachim Treusch was groundbreaking in moving science out of its ivory tower into public awareness within a few years only”, laudator Ernst-Ludwig Winnacker praised the laureate. As co-founder and first chairman of “Wissenschaft im Dialog” (WiD, Science in Dialogue), an initiative founded in 1999 by Germany’s leading science organizations and institutions, Treusch was instrumental in initializing a multitude of Public Understanding of Science projects in Germany such as the national science years by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, science summers or long science nights, whose programs provided hundred thousands of visitors with experiences of science as the societal driving force of our time. Winnaker also lauded the physician and science manager Joachim Treusch, who, as leader or member of many research steering organizations and committees, was always driven by his vision of science as crucial in solving the complex issues of future importance by problem-oriented interdisciplinary dialogue.

The Arthur Burkhardt-Foundation for the Advancement of Science (Arthur Brukhardt-Stiftung für Wissenschaftsförderung) was founded in 1983 by Arthur Burkhardt. The founder, who died in 1990, was executive chairman of Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik (WMF) for many years. It is the mission of the foundation to promote the interdisciplinary communication between the natural sciences and the humanities and social sciences. For this purpose, the foundation yearly awards the Arthur Burkhardt Prize endowed with 10,000 € for outstanding contributions in this area. Previous laureates are Renate Köcher, Hubert Markl, Hans Mohr, Jürgen Mittelstrass, Dagmar Schipanski and Ernst-Ludwig Winnacker.
