JACOBS UNIVERSITY BREMEN

Jacobs University’s Summer School in Physics and Computer Science: Modeling beyond disciplinary boundaries

From June 11 until June 22, a Heraeus-Summer School for graduate students and postdocs will take place at Jacobs University Bremen. Focus of the more than 30 lectures and tutorials lies on recent research perspectives in applications of Theoretical Physics, in particular Statistical Physics, to Computer Science. About 20 speakers from all over Europe and 40 participants will meet on Jacobs University campus. Further participants are welcome!

[ Jun 06, 2007]  Interfaces between statistical physics, theoretical computer science and informatics have recently attracted much attention due to the similarities between core problems in these disciplines. The similarities go beyond a superficial analogy. In common are random processes in large ensembles of interacting units. Statistical physics provides a rich toolbox for analyzing searching-, coding-, and optimization problems in computer science, quantum physics provides the background for quantum computation, quantum search and quantum cryptography.

The summer school, providing workshops and 35 lectures held by international scientists, will focus on applications of three branches from physics, disordered systems and spin glasses, growth processes of interfaces and aggregation, and quantum physics. It will point out the typical problems of interest, their solutions, and their relations between the different disciplines. During question sessions single topics can be discussed in profound detail. In addition to the academic agenda the students will have the opportunity to mingle during various social events.

The international summer school is supported by the Heraeus-foundation. It is organized by Dr. Hildegard Meyer-Ortmanns, Professor of Physics at Jacobs University. The summer school offers students and postdocs the opportunity to advance their understanding of topics at the frontier of interdisciplinary research, present their research during talks in the afternoon sessions and build networks.

Further participants are welcome; all lectures and discussions are free. All lectures will be given in the lecture hall of the Research II building on Jacobs University campus.
