Listening in on genes communicating: Jacobs University’s summer school on statistical physics of gene regulation

From July 16 to July 28, an international summer school for graduate students and postdocs, sponsored by the Wilhelm und Else Heraeus Foundation, will take place at Jacobs University. Organized by Marc-Thorsten Hütt, Professor of Computational Systems Biology, and Hildegard Meyer-Ortmanns, Professor of Physics, the school focuses on latest developments and intersections between genetics and physics. 15 speakers from India, the U.S., and all over Europe will meet with about 40 participants on campus for lectures and workshops. The summer school takes place in the Campus Center; guest participants are welcome!

In which way does a cell determine how strongly a gene is expressed? How do genes regulate other genes? The summer school aims at relating the different theoretical concepts and models developed around gene expression and gene regulation and therefore helping develop new integrative approaches to systems biology.

Currently one observes that the different, coexisting research areas related to gene expression and gene regulation are beginning to merge. With this summer school we would like to accelerate this process and put young scientists into the position of participating in these exciting developments, where the combined knowledge from Statistical Physics, Biology and Bioinformatics is an asset.

The summer school offers students and postdocs the opportunity to advance their understanding of topics at the frontier of interdisciplinary research, present their research during talks in the afternoon sessions and establish scientific contacts.
