JACOBS UNIVERSITY BREMEN

Language Lab Opens in the IRC

The IRC today opened the Language Lab to the university community. The digital workstations offer language programs for self-directed language learning in over 20 languages; from Arabic to Chinese, Dutch to Russian.

[ Aug 01, 2007]  The project was realised by the Multimedia and Academic Affairs departments, who responded to a 2006 Academic Council plan to promote self-directed language learning of Jacobs University students. Language Programs are offered each semester in German, French, Spanish and, for academic purposes, in English.

Any member of the community can, with a password and without an appointment, use the Language Lab which is located in the lower level of the IRC. For students taking language courses, the project has special significance. “For example, two thirds of the 300 to 400 students enrolled in language programs take German courses”, said Multimedia Director Hans Roes, “this project offers the ability to work individually or in tandem with students at Uni Bremen who are native German speakers, connected via the software, or face to face.”

The technical side of the project was realised together with the Fremdsprachenzentrum der Hochschulen im Lande Bremen (FZHB http://www.fremdsprachenzentrum-bremen.de/).

Further information about the Language Lab can be found at: http://teamwork.jacobs-university.de:8080/confluence/x/iwUb.

Said Roes, “This is an exciting project. We are very interested in feedback from the community.”
