JACOBS UNIVERSITY BREMEN

Warm welcome to College III’s new college masters

On September 25 the first change at the helm of College III took place: In a transition ceremony Tijana Janjic Pfander and Götz Pfander officially assumed the college master position from the dedicated College III “pioneers” Sarah and Ryan Richards. For four years, the Richards lived in College III and helped to provide a “home away from home” for 244 students from 45 nations.

[ Sep 25, 2007]  Sarah and Ryan were College Masters since College III opened in the fall of 2003. In addition to being College Masters, Sarah was also a teacher at the International School of Bremen and Ryan was a professor of chemistry researching in the field of nanoscience. Together with their daughter Sydney, who was born in July 2005, the Richards returned to Colorado in July 2007 leaving behind them years of special memories.

The new college masters Tijana Janjic Pfander and Götz Pfander, along with their children Mila and Sava, are looking forward to college life. In their welcome letter to the incoming students they describe their position in the following terms: “In our eyes, the colleges’ primary task is to establish an atmosphere that allows the college residents to study and to work successfully towards their academic degrees. In addition, a college at Jacobs University provides the students with first-hand intercultural experiences whose value and content can hardly be expressed in words. We also hope that life in College III will give plenty of intellectual stimulants through travel and discussions. Last but not least, we understand the necessity of giving students ample opportunities to relieve stress and tension through sporting events and festivities".

Prof. Dr. Pfander, a Mathematician, received his PhD from the University of Maryland in 1999, and has been at Jacobs University since 2002. Dr. Janjic Pfander received her PhD from the University of Maryland in 2001 and is currently a Mathematician at the Alfred Wegner Institute for Polar and Marine Research in Bremerhaven.

Jacobs University’s concept of residential colleges is still unique for German universities. All undergraduate students live together on campus in three colleges: Alfried Krupp College, Mercator College and College III. The colleges provide students with accommodation as well as a place to study and spend leisure time. Each college is headed by a Jacobs University professor and their partner who live in the college, supported by a college manager and a team of resident associates.

College 3 "The Place to Be!"
College III is the latest and the biggest of the three residential colleges at Jacobs University, opened in 2003. It's located at one end of the soccer field behind the tennis courts.
The college being at one end of the campus does not lead to the feeling of being left out; it has its own privacy as well as being well integrated into the community.
