New Chance for young people with immigration background: First Vodafone Foundation scholars at Jacobs University

In the academic year 2007/08 the Vodafone Foundation for the first time supports six new students at Jacobs University with its scholarship program Vodafone Chances, the only national scholarship program for gifted students with an immigration background who study at private universities.

[ Sep 25, 2007]  Joachim Treusch, President of Jacobs Univeristy, comments on the new cooperation with the Vodafone Foundation Germany: „In addition to excellence, intercultural competence is one of the most important aspects of our university’s educational concept. We are happy to welcome – with the support of Vodafone Foundation – six new talented students with migration background, who, with their multicultural biographical experiences, will add a valuable facet to our international campus community.” He further remarks that the social bridging Vodafone Chances aspires for – integration through educational support – is also a major concern of Jacobs University and that its success hopefully encourages other young immigrants to take opportunities.

The six Vodafone scholars at Jacobs University have already started their studies at the beginning of September. Although they finished the major part of their secondary education in Germany, they have gained, due to their immigration background, cultural experiences from five different countries: Azerbaijan, China, Indonesia, Turkey and Vietnam.

One of the scholars is Yonca Dege, a German of Turkish descent. The 19-year-old is studying “Integrated Social Sciences“ at Jacobs University. "One notices straight away, how open and cosmopolitan everyone is here on campus. With my two cultural identities I have been regarded as exotic for most of my life. Here it is normal that everyone comes from a different country”, she says about her first impressions of the Jacobs-Campus with its 1100 students from 90 nations. At Jacobs University every student has the opportunity to receive a personally customized financial aid package, including loans, grants and scholarships. In Yonca’s case Tuition fees are fully covered by the Vodafone Foundation. “I could not wish for anything more”, says Yonca.

Further Vodafone-scholarship holders at Jacobs University are:
Shinta Harsana, 19, student of „Integrated Social Sciences“ from Münster with Indonesian parents
Trung Hieu Nguyen, 19, student of „Integrated Social Sciences“; Vietnamese, born in the Czech Republic and has lived in Germany since 1990
Kin Ovanesov, 23, student of chemistry from Azerbaijan, who has lived in Germany since 2001
Chenshuai Sui, 19, Mathematics student; from China, who has lived in Hamburg since 2000 before coming to Bremen

The scholarship program of Vodafone Foundation "Vodafone Chancen":

Apart from receiving full grants for their tuition fees, the scholars receive additional financial support for their living costs. Moreover, they are supportet during internships, for visits abroad, and academic and social networking other Vodafone scholars. The requirements for the stipends are excellent high school results, willingness to perform, social commitment, and motivation. Furthermore, the applicants will have to pass the entry exams in the respective partner universities, which currently are, besides Jacobs University, the European Business School in Oestrich-Winkel, the Bucerius Law School in Hamburg, and the WHU – Beisheim School of Management in Vallendar. The final decisions about applications are made by independent experts and university representatives.
