Olympix 2007 - The Many Colours of Jacobs University

Another page in Jacobs University sports history was written Saturday as College 3 defended its reign as champions of the annual university Olympix. Carrying many of the traditional sporting events such as Volleyball, Soccer and Basketball, the "Green Machine" also carried the coveted Cheerleading award after very tough competition from neighbouring Krupp and Mercator colleges. Competition went late into the night, culminating in the awards ceremony at 1am Sunday morning.

[ Sep 30, 2007]  The university sports fields and halls were alive with the colourful pagentry of orange, black, green, blue and red jerseys as the five Olympix teams of Graduates, Alumni & Staff, College 3, Mercator and Krupp teams battled it out for glory from 9 am until shortly before midnight on Saturday Sept 29.

Rain and wind did not dampen the spirits of cheerleaders and players alike as they fought for every point, but the prophetic words of Friday's pep rally that the "Olympix First Commandment - College 3 shall win" were slowly realised.

"This year's competition was the hardest", said College 3 RA Renate Jurkowska and member of the C3 Block B team that won many of the events. "The other teams were amazing this year - we had to work really hard to win!"

"The Graduate student team were great! They overwhelmed everyone in the tug of war - we didn't stand a chance." commented one student after their block was literally pulled off their feet in competition Saturday afternoon. In addition to traditional events, "Fun" team events such as relay, dodge ball and three legged soccer added spice to the day's events.

It was agreed by all that Mercator was the most sportsmanlike college - urged on by Alumni Leon Keefer wearing a Lion costume and armed with a megaphone who kept the Mercatorians hopes alive when the going got tough.

Krupp's cheerleading squad followed their team through many individual victories throughout the day -culminating in an amazing "Pledge Krupp" routine that brought thunderous applause during the cheerleading contest.

The "magic potion of victory", taken away by previous College 3 master and Chemist Ryan Richards and his wife Sarah, seems to have been repaced by an equally magical "mathematical formula of success" by incoming college master and Mathematician Götz Pfander and his wife Tijana Janjic Pfander.

Most importantly the spirit of diversity and good sportsmanship, at the root of all successful communities, appears to be very much alive and well at Jacobs University Bremen.

Organisational Hiccup?
The Olympix Organisational Committee released this statement late Sunday evening in response to questions of irregularities regarding the Olympix results:

Dear Jacobs Community,

We, the OLYMPIX Organization Team, would like to apologize for mistakes that happened during several fun games in OLYMPIX 2007. We take full responsibility for the outcome and admit that had we not made those mistakes final results would have been different.

Please be informed that final results will not be recalculated. We hope Jacobs community will understand the current situation and will not engage in any harassment or negative comments directed at or about fellow teams.

OLYMPIX Organization Team
