JACOBS UNIVERSITY BREMEN

New Artwork to be Donated to University

On October 18, Jacobs University President Joachim Treusch will accept the donation of an artwork by Cuban artist Andres Aguiar Achi in the University Club. The work entitled „Amananbé Amananbá, una mano lava la otra y las dos lavan la Cara“
("One Hand Washes the Other and Both Wash the Face") measures 2 meter by 1 meter and is of mixed technique: wood, collage and oil. Commenting on his desire to give the work of art to the university, Mr. Achi explained that he was inspired by Jacobs University's international community.

[ Oct 09, 2007]  The works of Mr. Achi attempt to recreate the Afro Cuban religion theme from a probably never explored angle. This concern is based on the artistic approach of the most universal of Cuban painters, Wilfredo Lam, which he initiated.

"When I take up on the world of beliefs, I am interested in laying emphasis on the religious system, the ethnic systems, both coming from the south east of Nigeria (Calabar Province) and its descendants, known in Cuban as the 'carabalíes'... I approach myth and legend from an artistic point of view and try to make more humane this complex of beliefs, old legends and myths." states Mr. Achi. "I hope to express in my paintings, the essence of the mysteries living in us, the unknown with everyday, common symbols, from one generation to the next."

An exhibition of a variety of works by the artist will be presented by the Jacobs University Club from October 18 until November 1.
The vernissage will take place in the University Club on October 18 at 7 p.m.

In April 2007, President Treusch already received an art donation: a sculpture by Canadian artist Eli Bornstein, which stands in front of the Campus Center. Bornstein, best known for abstract three-dimensional works, which he terms "structurist reliefs", contributed to the international recognition of the genre.
