Organized Crime - Lecture by Prof. Dr. Pino Arlacchi

   

On Tuesday, November 6, 2007, Jacobs University invites you to the lecture »Organized Crime and Illegal Market in the European Union Today« by Prof. Dr. Pino Arlacchi. The former Executive Director of the UN-Office for Drugs Control and Crime Prevention and Professor of Sociology at the University of Sassari (Italy)gives an insight into the Illegal Market. Arlacchi will talk about the investigation of major criminality and the importance of fighting major evils like terrorism, organized crime and illegal markets.

From 1997 to 2002 Prof. Arlacchi was Undersecretary General of the United Nations in Vienna, charged with the task of fighting terrorism, organized crime and illegal markets. In 1994, he was elected to the Italian Chamber of Deputies, and in 1996, to the Italian Senate. Arlacchi, one of the most prominent scholars in the field of organized crime, money laundering, and drug trafficking, has served as Vice President of the Italian Parliamentary Commission on the Mafia Phenomenon. During 2004 he was in Kosovo where he built, under a mandate from the European Commission, the Financial Intelligence Unit against money laundering. The expert was a close friend of Giovanni Falcone, the great Italian prosecutor who was assassinated by the Mafia in 1992.

The lecture will take place in the context of the Univeristy Studies Course "Crime, Culture, and Science“ and will begin at 7.15 p. m. in the Conrad Naber Lecture Hall.
