New research network joins marine geosciences
expertise of the region

On December 19, 2007, nine leading research institutions in Bremen, Bremerhaven, and Lower Saxony founded the “Nordwest-Verbund Meeresforschung” (Northwest Network Marine Geosciences) to optimize the regional marine research cooperation and to provide up-to-date expert know-how for political consulting.

[ Dec 19, 2007]
The following institutions participate in the Northwest Network Marine Geosciences besides Jacobs University:

- Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research (AWI)
- Center for Tropical Marine Ecology (ZMT)
- German Maritime Museum (DSM)
- Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology (MPI)
- Senckenberg Institute Wilhelmshaven
- University of Applied Sciences Bremerhaven
- University of Bremen
- University of Oldenburg

“The combined expertise of the new network covers a thematic breadth that is unique in Germany and certainly cutting edge in Europe,” says Prof. Michael Schulz, head of the geoscience department of the University of Bremen and newly elected chairman of the network. In addition to expertise the consortium has a large working capacity in the field with about 1,500 employees. To mobilize synergies the scientist of the network institutions will plan and carry out their research projects together and share and advance the available up-to-date technology. A first joint action of the consortium will be the establishment of a competence center North Sea, which will address the consequences of the climate change for Germany’s coastal areas of the Northwest.
