JACOBS UNIVERSITY BREMEN

The Pennsylvania-Bremen connection:
New Lafayette exchange students arrived today

Today, Jacobs University welcomes a group of 35 guests from the US, who will join the campus community for the upcoming spring semester. The visit is based on the well-established cooperation with Lafayette College, a university with excellent undergraduate teaching located in Pennsylvania. The 34 students in the field of engineering, who are accompanied by their professor Erol Ulucakli, will be staying until June 3.

Exchange and visiting programs are an integral part of the Lafayette undergraduate program. Jacobs University was chosen as a partner in this program because of its focus on internationality, its location in the heart of Europe, the similarities in the curriculum, and English as language of instruction. The cooperation between the two universities, which was established in 2004, has been very fruitful: Since the first visiting group of 6 students arrived from Lafayette College in 2005, the numbers have been growing constantly, with the largest group yet visiting this year.

The students are not here on vacation however. In addition to their regular course work, Lafayette's visiting professor Erol Ulucakli will offer courses on EngProfessionalism. A course on German Politics and Culture as well as German language courses will provide the visiting students with insights on a new cultural background. Excursions, which include visits to major European cities like Berlin, Brussels, and Cracow, round out the program to give the students the chance to experience European perspectives and approaches, with Bremen at the centre.

“With so many new students, life on campus will be enriched through new initiatives and ideas while at the same time academics will also benefit from the input that the students will provide with the knowledge they obtained at their university. Thus, the program is not only of benefit to the “Lafayetties”, as we call them, but also to Jacobs students, who have an opportunity to meet students from a similar institution in the US,” says Antonia Gohr, director of Jacobs University’s Office of Academic Affairs.
