Blood drive back at Jacobs University

On February 27 and 28, student volunteers from Jacobs University, in co-operation with the Red Cross, will host a blood drive for the third time. The fully equipped mobile donation facility of the Red Cross, open to blood donors on both days from 2:30 p. m. to 7:30 p. m., is stationed in front of Jacobs University’s “University Club”. Students, staff, faculty, and the local neighbors are called to take part in the blood drive.

[ Feb 25, 2008]  Donating blood will take one hour, including a restorative snack. Donors need to be between 18 and 60 years of age. All potential blood donors are asked to bring their identity cards along and – if available – their blood donation documents. Donators do not need to register beforehand but can just drop by during the opening hours of the donation vehicle.

A substance that cannot be generated artificially, donated blood is urgently needed for treatment of ill and injured people across the country. The equivalent of 15.000 donations is needed every day in Germany alone, and there is hardly any hospital, which does not suffer from a scarcity of blood. Blood is needed for victims of severe accidents, cancer patients, or people with blood disorders like sickle cell anemia. Some people need regular blood transfusions to live. For nearly five million people who receive blood transfusions every year, a donation can make the difference.

“With about 100 registered donators, we have been extremely pleased with the turnout at Jacobs University in 2006 and 2007. We hope for another successful donation event in 2008,” says Andreas Mohrmann from the German Red Cross. As an organization the German Red Cross is not allowed to make profits, which, of course, also holds true for blood donation activities.
