International politics made in Bremen –
Model United Nations at Jacobs University

On Friday, March 16, 2008, the Bremen International Model United Nations (BRIMUN) hosts its fifth conference on the campus of Jacobs University Bremen. At this simulation of the United Nations, organized by Jacobs University’s MUN society, 150 participants from more than 20 different nations meet to simulate the activities of various UN committees. After five days of intense discussion and hard work, two resolutions will be presented and voted upon in the General Assembly on Thursday, 20th of March at 1:30pm in the Campus Center.

[ Mar 11, 2008]  Hectic on campus: The faces of the delegates of the United Nations Organization look worried. Tension is lying over the setting. A crisis in Latin America brings the international community into trouble and everyone has to react quickly to avoid further escalation. Now nothing counts but teamwork – all delegates must join their efforts to give peace a chance!

Jacobs University has enough experience to face such a crisis and the delegates will hopefully play in team as they managed before. Each spring Jacobs University hosts the event where the delegates seek for solutions to currently hot topics. This year’s agenda includes among others the humanitarian crisis in the Palestinian territories, the issue of greenhouse gas emissions and negotiations on free trade policies in developing nations. Special in this year’s conference is the simulation of MERCOSUR in which delegates of most South American states will gather to decide on economic issues – with vast political consequences.

BRIMUN and the concept of Model United Nations
The concept of simulating United Nations conferences was invented by students in the US more than 50 years ago. They sought to develop own ideas and opinions to secure peace and prevent conflict around the world and the newly established UN was their model. Today students around the globe meet at conferences to learn more about the UN’s work and the significance of diplomacy in world politics. Official rules of procedure are strictly followed and the conferences are held in English. BRIMUN came into being in 2004 and has developed into a small and high-quality conference.
