German Survivor of the Holocaust - Erna de Vries - visits Jacobs University to share her story

“You will survive and report about what they have done to us.” with these words Erna de Vries' mother said farewell to her daughter. The history of Holocaust is one of nameless terror – only through the words of an eye-witness can we possibly hope to understand the horrors of this tragedy. Ms. de Vries survived the concentration camps of Auschwitz and Ravensbrück. Her mother did not. Ms. de Vries shares her experiences so that no one will ever forget.

[ Mar 17, 2008]  Ms deVries grew up in Kaiserslautern, the only child of Jakob and Jeanette Löwenstein. She spent many years in Cologne working first as a caregiver and then as a nurse at the “Israelitisches Asyl” with the hopes of becoming a doctor.

After successfully avoiding two deportation orders, Ms de Vries was finally deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau in the summer of 1943 where her Mother died in November of that year. Ms de Vries was later moved to Ravensbrueck which was liberated by Allied troops in the fall of 1945.

Ms de Vries' talk, in German, will be held in the University Club at Jacobs University on Tuesday, March 25 at 19:00. The event is open to the public.
