Jacobs University Secures Second Place in Online Mathematics Olympiad

   

Results of the International Online Mathematics Olympiad held on March 19, 2008 were today announced. Alex Sava (gold), Vitalie Patrinica (silver), and Alin Iacob (bronze), all second year students, competed to earn a combined score which ranked Jacobs University second place behind Kiev National University; one of the traditional homes of the mathematic olympiad.

[ Apr 08, 2008]  The olympiad is an international "real-time event" that takes place simultaneously world wide. During the three hour event on the afternoon of March 19, students worked on the problems simultaneously at their home universities under the supervision of a faculty member. At Jacobs University, this was Prof. Dr. Dierk Schleicher.

Alex Sava, 2nd year student in Mathematics, earned a Gold Medal and was the second most successful among all participants.

Vitalie Patrinica, 2nd year student in Mathematics and Electrical Engineering, earned a Silver medal and was the 14th most successful student overall.

Alin Iacob, also a 2nd year student in Mathematics, earned a Bronze medal and scored rank 31 among all participants.

Participants from 15 universities world-wide participated in this years event hosted by the Ariel University Center in Israel.
