Campus News: Bone Marrow Donor Drive

For the first time in its history, Jacobs University Bremen will host a bone marrow donor drive by the German Bone Marrow Donor Centre (DKMS Deutsche Knochenmark-spenderdatei gGmbH). This charitable trust is the greatest stem cell donor data bank world wide, counting 1.655.034 donors.

[ Apr 15, 2008]  The event, to be held on April 19th, is being organised, together with the DKMS, by Jacobs students Laura Schulz, Teresa Haberland, Anna Huber and Henrike Resemann. The Bone Marrow Donor Drive follows the recently successful blood donor drive held by students together with the Red Cross in February.

Every 45 minutes someone is diagnosed with leukemia in Germany. In particular children and adolescents are most affected by this horrible illness.

If a patient "matches" a donor, they are asked to donate their bone marrow - either by peripheral blood stem cell seperation which does not involve an operation, or by bone marrow harvest where the bone marrow is extracted from the pelvic bone.

Donors are needed, not only to assist those suffering from leukemia, but all diseases that require a blood stem cell donation. All community members are invited to donate; the more diverse the donors, the more diverse their bone marrows and thus, the higher the chance of possibly saving a life.

Each typing costs 50€ and no insurance covers the laboratory cost for analyzing the blood. As donors are not often able to pay the 50€, donations are requested.

The Bone Marrow Donor Drive will take place on April, 19th from 10:00-16:00 in the ground floor of West Hall.

The main concern of the DKMS is the continuous development of the number of voluntary donors., to allow as many leukemia patients as possible a new chance of life. A suitable donor can now be found for 75% of those affected. This has been a great success - but one patient in four still waits in vain.
