JACOBS UNIVERSITY BREMEN

Science and Politics - On the History of a Remarkable Relationship

University President Joachim Treusch spoke as part of the Carl Schurz Deutsch-Amerikanischer Club lecture series on the subject of the remarkable relationship between science and politics. The lecture was held in Bremen's City Hall (Oberenhalle des Rathauses) on April 22.

[ Apr 23, 2008]  The relationship between scientist and state has been in discussion since the time of Plato. Are scientists necessary and respected counsellors, tiresome court jesters or guardians of the spirit? Are they guarantors of economic progress or architects of the cultural superstructure of society?

The built-in tension in this relationship has shown in past centuries a continual re-assessment of value, the basis of which can be helpful lessons for both science and politics.

With 16 years at the helm of the Jülich research center, before taking over the presidency of Jacobs University, President Treusch is no stranger to the turbulent and yet successful union of science and politics.

The CSDAC lecture series are held twice yearly and have featured, among others, Dr Theo Summer (Die Zeit), Dr. Letitia Chambers (US ambassor to the UN), and Mr. Duane C. Butcher (American Consul in Hamburg).
