[ Apr 28, 2008]
About the lecture:
China and India are experiencing a period of sustained economic growth, and these two countries, along with the USA, are expected to have the highest gross domestic product in the world in three or four decades time. There will be a significant rise in both countries of the consumer class, although their per capita incomes will continue to be much lower than those in the developed countries. The implications of this on future investment, pricing and marketing will require to be closely analyzed. With the evolution of a poly-centric world, shifts in the distribution of economic, demographic and technological power and the growing importance of the most populous continent, Krishnan Srinivasan will discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the two Asian giants and their likely impact on the global scene as we progress into this ‘Asian century’.

Krishnan Srinivasan graduated from Christ Church, Oxford and joined the Indian diplomatic service. After serving as ambassador to several countries, he became secretary and then foreign secretary, and thereafter Commonwealth deputy secretary-general. He has held academic appointments at Oxford, Cambridge, the Netherlands and India where he is Honorary Professor at ASCI Hyderabad and Fellow of the Maulana Azad Institute for Asian Studies at Calcutta.

Currently Srinivasan is a Senior Fellow at the School of Advanced Study in London and Fellow of the Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study where he is working on cooperation and conflict among great powers in the 21st century. His recent books include "The Rise, Decline and Future of the British Commonwealth" and "The Jamdani Revolution".

The Bachelor's program International Politics and History of Jacobs University's School of Humanities and Social Sciences probes the foundations of international politics in terms of institutions, processes and ideologies. Students in the Major acquire the analytical tools of political science theories and historical inquiries. They come to a critical understanding of present issues and gain the necessary knowledge of developments which have formed today’s world during the past two centuries.
