Rowing for a good cause: The Jacobs Buccaneers raced on Lake Starnberg

On July 19, 2008, Jacobs University’s rowing team – the Jacobs Buccaneers – joined the over 100 crews in the second Else Kröner-Fresenius Foundation benefit regatta "Rowing against Cancer” on Lake Starnberg. The coxed four-man gig started in the first race of the day at 10:30 a. m. and clearly lead the 500 m race against the other five teams. In the professional semi-final, the crew held a second place when, due to technical problems with the borrowed boat, they fell back and had to be content with the fourth position. As last year, the proceeds of the regatta will go to the foundation for funding a special sports program for cancer patients.

[ Jul 23, 2008]  The coxswain, Sarah-Elisa Nees, the oarsmen Güray Güven, Steffen Hauth, Jakob Hausschildt, Johnson Bankole and Sonja Wohllaib (reserve, who rowed with the Mainz team, which made it in the end to the Finals) together with Jacobs University President Joachim Treusch, who drove the university’s 9-seater bus, set off early Friday morning from campus towards Starnberg. On location and in their first race, the Jacobs participants, who were invited by regatta patron Dr. Gabriele Kröner, competed against the Bucerius Law School team from Hamburg, a team from the City of Starnberg, a team from the PR department of the Munich Ludwig-Maximilians University, a team from the Deutsche Eliteakademie (German Elite Academy) and the team Gesundheitspolitik (Health Politics) with local politicians. Altogether there were over 30 races during the event with crews from various local and larger companies, clinics, foundations and associations, rowing clubs, and schools. The participation of the Jacobs University team was sponsored by the companies Lürssen and Datenlotsen.

The charitable “Rowing against Cancer” is a series of benefit regattas to promote the initiative “Sport and Cancer”. The project was founded because cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy often suffer from restricted mobility and extreme exhaustion. The proceeds from the charitable event will support an exercise program to improve the quality of life for cancer patients. With the aid of a moderate endurance training within the program “Sport and Cancer” the course of disease, the compatibility of the therapy and the quality of life are affected noticeable in a positive way for most of the patients.
