Two new benches at the North-West corner of Jacobs University’s playing fields now invite students, staff, and visitors to spend some leisure time – in conversation, reading or watching one of the university’s numerous sports teams at training or at fighting gripping matches against neighborhood teams. The two new pieces of campus furniture are a gift from the Northern-German branch of Citibank Germany.

“Resting on a bench in a nice location is simply delightful. So when I first visited Jacobs University and fell in love with its beautiful campus, the idea of installing some benches as a gift of our banking company evolved quite spontaneously”, says Thomas Horchler, financial consulting manager of Northern Germany’s Citibank branch. Together with his colleague, Stefan Preuk, he officially consigned the benches last Tuesday. The benches, says Horchler, mark his bank’s appreciation of and accordance with some of Jacobs University’s fundamental principles: internationality, intellectuality, and responsibility, especially in the face of the growing impact of globalized business. “We will continue to follow Jacobs University’s dynamic development with great interest”, he concludes.
Citibank is a major international bank, founded in 1812 as the City Bank of New York, later First National City Bank of New York. Today, Citibank is the consumer and corporate banking arm of financial services giant Citigroup, one of the largest companies in the world. The banking company is represented in more than 100 countries and on all six continents. In July 2008, the German subsidiary of Citibank with its 3.25 million retail banking customers was sold to the French mutual savings bank Crédit Mutuel, the second largest banking company in France.
