Brigitte Kudielka, Professor of Health Psychology at Jacobs University, together with her co-author Clemens Kirschbaum from the Technical University of Dresden received the Biological Psychology Author Award for the Top cited Paper in 2006 and 2007 for the paper “Sex differences in HPA axis responses to stress: a review”, Volume 69/1 (2005). Biological Psychology, a leading journal of the field, focuses on the biological aspects of psychological states and processes.

[ Dec 12, 2008]  The article reviews new findings on differences for men an women in the so-called hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, which controls reactions to stress and regulates many body processes, including the immune system, mood and emotions, sexuality, and energy storage and expenditure. The HPA axis as part of the neuroendocrine system is a complex set of interactions among the hypothalamus and the pituitary gland – both located in the brain – as well as the adrenal glands on top of the kidneys. The main focus of the paper is on human responses to acute psychological stress, discussing methodological issues, summarizing empirical findings on sex differences in HPA axis stress responses over the life span with respect to laboratory as well as field studies. Finally, underlying mechanisms explaining at least some of the reported sex differences are discussed.

Before joining Jacobs University in summer 2008, Brigitte Kudielka held several research positions, amongst them the Institute for Mind & Biology, University of Chicago, the Department of Behavioural Sciences, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH), Zurich, and the University of Trier as Head of an Emmy-Noether Research Group.
