An investment into the future: Employers’ association NORDMETALL supports Jacobs University with 10 million euros

NORDMETALL, the newly formed employers’ association of the Northern German metal and electrical industry, will support the further growth and development of Jacobs University with 10 Mio euros. This was announced today by Ingo Kramer, chairman of the association METALL UNTERWESER and president of the NORDVERBUNDES e. V., at the annual general meeting of GESAMTMETALL (employers’ association of the national metal and electrical industry) on-campus. The donation was bestowed on the occasion of the fusion of the three regional associations METALL UNTERWESER, NORD-WEST-METALL and NORDMETALL forming the new „NORDMETALL“.

Ingo Kramer, chairman of the association METALL UNTERWESER and president of the NORDVERBUNDES e. V.: “After the successful reorganization of our employers’ association the donation of 10 Mio euros is intended to be a strong signal in favor of the further development of Northern Germany as an area of international importance and global competitiveness both in business and science. Jacobs University is an ideal partner for us with its unique international, intercultural and transdisciplinary profile and can already be counted among the ‘scientific beacons’ of the region with national and international radiance. We want to contribute to the future development of this innovative university model and sustain its further growth“.

The donation foremost is intended to enable the 40-%-increase of students from currently about 1000 to 1400 within the next five years, Kramer continues. The longstanding member of Jacobs University’s board of governors also is delighted that the university’s success so far fully warrants the faith placed into it by the employers’ association METALL UNTERWESER: As early as September 2000, one year before academic activity started at the former International University Bremen, the association established a foundation of 10 Mio DM as a launching assistance in favour of the private university.

Joachim Treusch, Jacobs University President: “We are immensely grateful and happy about the generous donation of one of the biggest industry associations of our region and regard the exemplary support of future NORDMETALL as another strong token of trust placed into the profile and the achievement potential of our university”. Such close cooperations between science and economy more than ever are a major driving force for developments in today’s knowledge-based society, Treusch continues. Beyond supporting the further development of the university he sees the NORDMETALL donation also as an eminent contribution to the consolidation of the federal state of Bremen and the future economic development of the region. “With the public start-up funds we received from Bremen, the major investment of the Swiss Jacobs Foundation last year and today’s NORDMETALL donation, Jacobs University proves not only to be innovative in terms of its educational and research approach, but also a very successful model of a public-private-partnership”, Treusch closes his comments.
