Astrophysics & Space Physics
Phenomena that occur close to the Earth, say in the upper atmosphere or in our solar system, are the subject of space physics, while phenomena concerning stars other than the Sun, our Galaxy or even the Universe as a whole are the subject of astrophysics and cosmology.
Both space physics and astrophysics seek to understand the cosmos by physical means. The questions to be addressed include some that have bothered philosophers for centuries:
* What is the origin of the Universe?
* What is the role of Earth in the cosmos?
* How do solar systems form and evolve?
* Under which conditions can life possibly emerge?
* How do stars and planetary systems form and evolve?
as well as more modern queries:
* How are arorae generated?
* How do 1A Supernovae occur?
* What happens when galaxies collide?
Generally, Space Astrophysics requires a close interplay between observation, pure theory and numerical modelling.
Why study Space Astrophysics?
First and foremost: out of curiosity about the cosmos we live in! But in addition, although the subject of Space Astrophysics is beyond our every day experience, the methods used have countless applications here on Earth.
A student of Space Astrophysics receives a sound, yet broad education in physics, mathematics, numerical modelling and high-tech applications. Due to this solid background, students of Space Astrophysics have very good job prospects in a broad range of fields, both inside and outside of academia.
