Jacobs University at EXPO 2010 in Shanghai
Jacobs as part of the Urban Best Practice Area
Jacobs University enters the floor of the World Exposition’s “Urban Best Practice Area” in Shanghai to share the university’s singular profile and spirit with the visitors of EXPO 2010.
An innovative multimedia exhibit based on a smart presentation technology serves this very purpose: A round projection table invites the visitors to start an informative visual journey through all facets of the Jacobs Campus world.
By placing a hand on one of four marked areas on the table surface, the EXPO guests set off a presentation. A menu appears on the surface as if “growing” out of the visitors’ hand, which allows them to explore different facts of Jacobs University and browse through rich photo material and film footage presenting life on Europe’s unique international campus.
The hand-movement based navigation through the university topics “Campus”, “Community”, “Study” and “Science” is supported by an intelligent tracking technology: An infrared sensitive camera, which is suspended over the table, plots the hand positions and triggers the beamer projections that correspond to the respective topics selected by the visitors.

Excellence and transdisciplinarity, diversity and community, leadership and values – thanks to this unique profile Jacobs University fits perfectly into the EXPO’s “Urban Best Practice Area” as a part of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen’s exhibition space. Germany’s premier international private university will certainly set an example for best practice in higher education there.
The World Fair themed “Better City, Better Life” is on from May 1 until October 31, 2010. 70 million visitors are expected to come to the 5.28 square-kilometer area that is dedicated to exhibitions, events and forums at the core of the mega-city Shanghai.
