Incoming Students
We extend a very warm welcome to those of you who want to study at Jacobs University Bremen during their study abroad program. On this page, you will find information for incoming visiting students and for incoming exchange students.
Jacobs University Study Abroad
Jacobs University considers applications for a limited number of spaces from students currently enrolled at other colleges and universities who wish to study at Jacobs University for a limited period of time. Approved applicants are invited to spend a semester or year at Jacobs University, taking courses for credit to be applied toward the undergraduate degree at the home institution. Visiting and exchange students are not registered as candidates for a degree at Jacobs University.
Visiting Program
If your home university or college does not have an exchange agreement with Jacobs University, you are invited to apply to Jacobs University as a visiting student for the Visiting Program. In this case you must pay directly to Jacobs University all expenses related to your study abroad semester.
Exchange Program
If your home university or college has an exchange agreement with Jacobs University, you are invited to apply to Jacobs University as an exchange student for the Exchange Program. In this case your tuition fee at Jacobs University will (depending on the agreement) most likely be waived. You continue to pay tuition to your home university, but spend your semester at Jacobs University. All other expenses related to your study abroad semester must be paid directly to Jacobs University.
Erasmus is the university exchange program of the European Union. If your university has an Erasmus exchange agreement with Jacobs University in your major, you can apply as an Erasmus exchange student. If you want to find out whether you can participate in an Erasmus exchange program with Jacobs University, please go to your International Relations Office or consult the website of your university. Jacobs University's Erasmus institutional code is D BREMEN09. Please note that Jacobs University Bremen might still be listed as 'International University Bremen'.
Selecting Your Courses for Credit
Course Catalogue: For a list of courses typically offered at Jacobs University you can consult the course catalogue. Please visit the official webpages to see the courses offered by the School of Humanities and Social Sciences and the School of Engineering and Science. If you need additional information for a course, please notify the International Office or contact representatives of the respective major directly.
Academic Credits: To know whether you can transfer the credits and grades of courses taken at Jacobs University to your home institution, you must ask the Registrar's Office or the International Office of your home university. You will probably have to fill out a request for credit transfer stating the Jacobs University courses you want to take and the courses they correspond to at your home university.
On Jacobs University's application form you are asked to state where your grade report (transcript) should be sent after your stay at Jacobs University. Once your home institution receives Jacobs University's transcript stating all the courses you completed and the grades and credits you received for them, it is up to your home institution to determine the appropriate credits and grades for the courses.
Application Process
Applications for fall term enrollment (late August to end of December) are due by May 15. Those who wish to enroll for the spring term (late January to the end of May) should apply by October 15.
A complete application to Jacobs University Visiting/ Exchange Program includes the following:

- Preliminary Course Information
- Program Approval
- Letter of Recommendation from a faculty member or school official who knows you well
- Financial Declaration
- Program Participation Agreement
- High School and University Transcripts. You must provide us with copies of the last transcripts of all high schools and universities you have attended until now and an official transcript (not a copy) from the university you are currently attending.
- Proof of English. All non-native English speakers are required to provide their TOEFL results (minimum score of 575, paper based or 90, internet based) or their scores from another English proficiency test.
- Passport copy.
Financing Your Study at Jacobs
Visiting students will be charged the same fees as other undergraduates. Visiting students at Jacobs University are not eligible for financial aid.
Exchange students are students coming to Jacobs University on the basis of an exchange agreement between their home institution and Jacobs University. The tuition fee at Jacobs University is waived for the exchange participants. Apart from the tuition exchange students will be charged the same fees as Jacobs University students. Exchange students at Jacobs University are not eligible for financial aid. Erasmus exchange students can receive a study grant from the European Union. To apply for this grant, please contact the International Office of your home university.
Note: Please stay in regular contact with the International Office throughout the application, acceptance, pre-arrival period and for the duration of your stay at Jacobs University.
