Requirements

Applicants need to fulfil the following criteria to be considered:

    • A completed application for graduate study form (APPLY ONLINE);

    • Proof of a bachelor’s or master degree or its equivalent (at least 180 Credit Points according to the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS)) in a field of study close to the MA program (i.e. History, Area Studies, Cultural Studies or Social Sciences);

    • Proof of proficiency in English (see application form; students who have received a prior degree from an English-language university are exempt from this requirement. A minimum score of 575 is required on the paper-based TOEFL test, a score of 213 on the TOEFL computer-based test or a score of 90 on the internet-based test), possible is also Level C1 according to CEF (Common European Framework) or IELTS (Competent User Band 6,5);

    • An essay not longer than 2 pages (600 words) explaining why you are choosing this program and what your research interests are;

    • Two letters of recommendation (not older than 2 years) from faculty members who can attest the quality of the candidate;

    • Examples of scholarly work, if available.

    • The application for the program can also be submitted if the preceding study program has not been completed till the application deadline. The applicant has to prove a performance of 150 Credit Points or an equivalent academic record. If the applicant meets all the other prerequisites for the admission, proves his or her first university degree till the 30th September as well as submits the applicable documents by no later than the 31st of December of the same year, he or she can be admitted to the MA program.

We seek students who have very strong records of academic performance as undergraduate students.

Application deadline

There are normally two rounds of application. The first deadline is February 1st and the second is May 1st of each year. Late applications will not be accepted.

We will make every effort to inform you about our decision within eight weeks after the deadline has expired.

All selection decisions are final. Due to the large number of applications we receive each year, we will not be able to give feedback to those who have not been successful in their application.
