Spintronics: Physicists succeed in measuring a nano-mechanic torsion effect induced by electronic spin flip
Nov 11, 2008

An international team of physicists under the lead of quantum mechanic Pritiraj Mohanty from Boston University for the first time succeeded in measuring a tiny mechanic twist of a nano wire, which had been triggered by a spin reversal of spin-polarized electrons – a so-called spin flip. The experiment confirmed a scientific prediction published more than ten years ago in the Annalen der Physik by the theoretical physicists Stefan Kettemann from Jacobs University and Peter Fulde from the Max Planck Insititute for Complex Systems. The effect, which experts appreciate as promising for developing new perspective in spintroncs – the utilization of the electrons’ spin for electronic circuits –, is now published in a joint article in the current issue of Nature Nanotechnology (doi:10.1038/nnano.2008.311).

These findings are now published online in the journal Naturwissenschaften. (DOI 10.1007/s00114-007-0305-4 and DOI 10.1007/s00114-007-0306-3).

Als das World Trade Center zusammenbrach
Nov 06, 2002

When the World Trade Center collapsed
Nov 06, 2002

The ever repeating news images of the collapsing World Trade Center seemed to many people unreal and never bridged the gap of the lacking emotional realisation of last year’s tragic events. A more comprehensible and human dimension of the tragedy is offered in “Here is New York.” The photo exhibition documents a very personal view of “9-11” as seen by a multitude of different photographers, professionals as well as amateurs. Jens Förster, IUB professor of psychology and guest speaker at the opening of “Here is New York” on October 27, 2002, in Bremen, explained the “ancient” cognitive power of such personal impressions.
