On BORDA for a good cause
At this week’s Inter@act Exhibition, held at TheaterSpace on December 8, Jacobs students will be collecting money for Bremen-based charity BORDA (Bremen Overseas Research and Development Association), an organization that is devoted to improving sanitation in schools in developing countries.
December 7, 2011The exhibition will feature works of art and performances by talented students in electrical engineering, computer science, art history, politics and social sciences. All the works are the result of the USC Art & Technology led by Jacobs lecturer Dr. Aidan Boyle.
Anna Lambertz, Katharina Bönsch and Lydia Amenyogbo, three undergraduate students at Jacobs University, meanwhile, have been working with BORDA to develop fundraising campaign for the organization’s sanitation projects.
They have now teamed up with the exhibition organizers and put the event in aid of the charity. People can contribute by buying food or submitting directly in the donation boxes at the event. The trio will give all money received from charitable donors during the exhibition to the project ‘BORDA hilft! School shouldn’t make sick!’
This yearly fundraising campaign collects money to build decentralized and community-based water systems in schools. Such systems not only improve sanitation from a hygienic point of view but also provide safety and privacy in sanitation facilities.
“I particularly support BORDA’s approach because it puts a big emphasis on finding sustainable solutions that are realized together with the communities and that are environmentally friendly. For example, the communities will be educated in hygiene and they will be offered paid jobs to keep the facilities clean,” Anna Lambertz explains.
For Katharina Bönsch the motivating factor is the impact of hygiene on both health and education. “Money donated to BORDA is used directly for projects in the countries and for nothing else. Furthermore, the contact between the members of BORDA in the different countries is very close, which is crucial for the success of such an organization,” she says.
