Each year the Wirtschaftsrat Bremen-Nord honors companies and enterprises that have notably contributed to the economic development and the creation of jobs in the region of Bremen-Nord as well as generating a positive image for the borough.

WIR Chairman Rainer Frankenberg says about the Entrepreneur Prize 2011: “We have made a great choice and are happy to present our 10th award to Jacobs University in the 10th year of its existence.”

On behalf of Jacobs University President Joachim Treusch thanked the business council honoring the institution: “We are proud to receive this prize from the Wirtschaftsrat Bremen-Nord. It is proof that, ten years after its launch, Jacobs University is not only a thriving model for the University of the 21st century, but also locally recognized as a successful business. This honor also strengthens our commitment to continuously build close connections and cooperations with our scientific and economic partners in Bremen.”

Jacobs University is an important economic factor for the region: More than 1800 students and staff live in Bremen contributing more than four million Euro per year to Bremen’s budget through the redistribution of income between Bund and Länder (Bund-Länder-Finanzausgleich).

Coupled with tax revenue, investments and consumer spending Bremen can look at an estimated annual revenue stream of between €10 and €15m per year with Jacobs University’s overall budget standing at €50m per annum.

Jacobs University has developed very successfully over the last decade. The number of students has increased ten-fold to a current total of 1335 and the number of study programs has tripled.

Third-party funds have increased by an annual average of 25% over the course of the last ten years standing at 12.2 million Euro in 2011.

Excellent evaluations in Germany’s renowned CHE-Ranking, and recognition by the nation-wide Excellence initiative for its Bremen International Graduate School of Social Sciences (BIGSSS), a joint cooperation with the University of Bremen, evidently show that Jacobs University has long been firmly established in the German and international education landscape.
