Bremen Regatta 2011
While most students on the Jacobs campus had a lie-in and enjoyed their time off on the October 3 bank holiday, Jacobs University’s rowing teams got up early to compete in the Bremer Meisterschaften regatta on the local Werdersee. Senior rowers had long anticipated the first regatta of the season, while rowing newcomers nervously awaited their first races.
October 4, 2011Jacobs rowers first participated in the double-sculling boat category with Anika Ballent and the new female coach, Marita Hesse, a former world-championship rower, showing excellent technique and skills in the 500m distance and coming second in the race.
Next up was the mixed-eight competition. Two Jacobs’ boats, the newly acquired El Ganador and the tried-and-tested Frieda raced against each other and a team from Bremer Sport-Club. After practicing a few power starts, the Jacobs seniors in both boats were ready for the race. The short racing distance of 500m was covered by all boats in no time. After leading for most of the race, El Ganador placed a close second behind Bremer Sport-Club and Frieda came in third.
Rowing teams from Jacobs University’s four Colleges Krupp, Mercator, College 3 and Nordmetall, were also out in full force competing against each other in a student mixed-eight race over 500m.
Bedecked in their college colours red, blue, green and yellow, the crews - mostly novice rowers with some seniors - settled in their gig boats and headed for the starting line. Students, resident associates and college masters from Jacobs had assembled on shore to support their respective colleges.
All four crews showed fierce passion and determination to reach the finish line, but in the end it was down to Krupp College, whose team managed to row home a spectacular victory; College Nordmetall followed close behind with Mercator and College 3 holding third and fourth place respectively.
