Host Family Program Q&A
Find out all about Jacobs University’s host family program, which has been running for more than ten years, during an information evening taking place on August 4 at 6.30 at the Conrad Naber Lecture Hall (Reimar Lüst building).
July 29, 2011Jacobs University volunteers Connie Bröker and Jutta Eckhoff, who have been managing the host family program since its start in 2001, will explain the ins and outs of the scheme and answer questions.
Every August freshmen from all over the world come to Bremen to live and study on the Jacobs campus. Many of them have never been to Germany before and have never had the chance to engage with German people or experience the culture.
The program encourages families, couples and single people from Bremen and the local area to take international students from Jacobs University under their wing. Although host families will not have 'their' student living with them, they will be the ones trying to help them settle into their new place and introduce them to life in Bremen.
Some families invite students to their homes, show them around in Bremen and sometimes take them out to special events. Some host families have also been known to spend Christmas and other festive occasions with the students. In turn our host families are frequently invited to Jacobs University events, as part of the Jacobs University family.
The amount of time you spend together with your host student depends in part, of course, on how busy you are with your daily life. But one of the great benefits of this program is the opportunity to become acquainted with the culture and way of living your student comes from. You are encouraged to build a mutually rewarding relationship with your host student. Many of these relationships grow into long-lasting friendships that outlast the student’s three years at Jacobs University.
