It was a premiere. For the first time, Jacobs University Bremen participated in the “World University Ranking 2022 by Subject” of the British magazine Times Higher Education (THE) with its social science programs. And at the very first attempt, it made it into the top 175 universities in the world with its two bachelor and two masters programs in this field. In a German nation-wide comparison, the English-language university even ranked eighth in social sciences.

With its social science programs “Society, Media and Politics” and “International Relations: Politics & History” (bachelor degrees) as well as “Data Science for Society and Business” and “International Relations” (masters degrees), Jacobs University participated in the renowned university ranking. And in its debut, it scored among the top 20 percent of the participating universities. A total of 870 universities took part in the subject-specific ranking.

The private university was particularly impressive with its international orientation. In this category, Jacobs University ranked first in Germany and 30th worldwide. Almost 80 percent of its students come from abroad to study in Bremen; concurrently, a large proportion of the employees in research, teaching, and administration have an international background as well. But the university also scored well with its teaching. In this area, Jacobs University's social science programs placed ninth in a German nation-wide comparison and are among the best 25 percent internationally.

"The ranking once again demonstrates the high quality of our education and our academic standards," said Professor Thomas Auf der Heyde, Provost and Managing Director of Jacobs University. "It strengthens our position, and the standing of the region, in the international competition for the best talent. I would like to thank all those involved for their efforts and am delighted about this excellent result."

THE Ranking is based on scores in five categories: research, teaching, academic citations, internationality, and external funding. They are assigned a variety of indicators such as the supervision ratio of teachers to students, the international exchange of researchers and teachers, or the international co-authorship of publications.

Jacobs University regularly receives high marks in other university comparisons: It has already achieved top positions in the general THE Ranking, in the EU-oriented U-Multirank, and in the CHE Ranking, the most detailed university ranking in the German-speaking world.
