Prof. Klaus Boehnke appears at “Wissen um 11“
At 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 30, Prof. Dr. Klaus Boehnke is scheduled to give a presentation titled “Social Cohesion Radar – a Study Focusing on Bremen” at the House of Science in Bremen downtown. Boehnke has been Professor of Social Science Methodology at Jacobs University since 2002 and, since 2007, Vice Dean of the Bremen International Graduate School of Social Sciences (BIGSSS), an interuniversity institution (University of Bremen/Jacobs University) of doctoral education that receives support from the German Research Foundation (DFG) as part of the Excellence Initiative jointly sponsored by the German federal and state governments. For some three decades now, Boehnke has been studying the subject of political socialization – meaning, in the broadest sense, the question of how people grow into the subject of politics in a certain environment.
In his talk, Boehnke will present a study that analyzes the cohesion of countries, states within Germany, and even urban districts in Bremen. This first public presentation on the study will focus in particular on the study’s findings regarding cohesion in 78 districts in Bremen. The study is based on a survey of just under 3,000 Bremen residents, who were asked about various aspects of social cohesion in the neighborhoods where they live: the quality of social networks, trust in their fellow people, acceptance of diversity, identification with the neighborhood, trust in local institutions, perception of fairness and justice, solidarity and willingness to help others, acceptance of social rules and engagement in civil society.
