Christmas came a month early for some members of the Jacobs community when their academic excellence and community achievements were recognized by the university in a festive award ceremony.

After a welcome address Jacobs University President Joachim Treusch presented the awards for students from the so-called President’s List. The list is created at the end of each academic year and comprises the most excellent undergraduate students at Jacobs University. A total of 93 students were honored last night.

Each year the Deutsche Akademische Austauschdienst (German Academic Exchange Service) rewards international students for their academic achievements and their social and intercultural commitment. Dr. Thorsten Thiel, Jacobs University Vice President, handed over the DAAD Award to Emanuel Gafton. The 23-year-old from Romania graduated from Jacobs in Earth & Space Sciences this year and has since started his Masters in Astroparticle Physics.

Also acknowledged on this year's President’s List, Emanuel is a high achiever and has just published his first scientific paper. He works as a teaching assistant at Jacobs and has been very much involved in the Jacobs community as a member of the rowing team and the J-Capella Choir. Furthermore he helped to organize social and cultural events at College 3 and took part in Jacobs University’s Open House events.

Emanuel’s accomplishments were further honored when Jacobs Founding Dean Gerhard Haerendel presented him with a fellowship.

Meanwhile the Hempel Fellowship for two Master students was awarded to Alexandra Filip (21) from Romania and Bangladeshi-born Wayesh MD. Qarony (24). Both study Communications, Systems and Electronics at Jacobs. The awards were handed over by Hans- Werner and Robert Hempel, Managing Directors of the Bremen-based Hanseatische Waren Handels-Gesellschaft.

After piano music by student René Benjamin Balderas, the Claus Halle Scholarship recognizing outstanding US students, was presented by Prof. Dr. Hendrik Birus, Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, to Jessica Anne Chaney (21), a second–year undergraduate in Intercultural Relations and Behavior.

Prof. Dr. Birus also awarded a second scholarship, founded in 2009 and named after Howard L. Resnikoff. The prize for high-achieving American freshmen went to Abbey Taylor, an 18-year-old Physics student.

Last but not least, the President’s Award was bestowed on Jacobs University’s Art Coordinator René Wells, who received the honor to standing ovations. During the ceremony President Treusch said: “With his high commitment enthusiasm and energy, dreams, fantasy and ideas Rene Wells has developed a flourishing art scene here on campus together with all interested students.”
