Eid Celebrations 2010
Jacobs Muslim Community
Sep 12 2010 - 20:00
College III Servery
On behalf of the Muslims community at Jacobs University, we invite you to the upcoming Eid celebration on Wednesday September 12th, starting 8:00pm. The program will last for about an hour and is located in the College 3 servery; traditional food will be served afterwards.
It is an annual cultural event celebrated at the end of Ramadan. The purpose of hosting this event is to share a bit of Ramadan, the holy month for Muslims, with the Jacobs community, and thus exposing the myriad of cultures at Jacobs, and of course the host families of Jacobs students, to a more personal side of the Muslim faith. There will be traditional music and food, henna and other entertainment. Below is a short description of Eid in case this holiday is new for you. We hope to see you all there in traditional clothes (preferably).
It would be our pleasure if you attend the event and grace us with your presence.
Eid-Al-Fitr, abbreviated to Eid, is an Arabic word meaning festivity and is a Muslim holiday that marks the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting. Eid starts the day after Ramadan ends, and is verified by the sighting of the new moon. Eid Al-Fitr is also known as the "Smaller Eid" as compared to the "Greater Eid", Eid Al-Adha. Eid is a joyous occasion with important religious significance. Muslims celebrate not only the end of fasting but also thank Allah (God) for the self control and strength that Allah gave them. It is a time of giving and sharing, and almost everyone dresses up in traditional attire to celebrate the festivities.
Please note that our students will be havinga fund raising for the Pakistan flood victims during the Eid event.
