Presidium of Leopoldina visits Jacobs University
On Wednesday, October 26, 2011 the presidium of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina together with some of their guests visited Jacobs University. In the morning the members and their guests met with Jacobs president Joachim Treusch, his management team and Jacobs researchers from different disciplines. A guided tour through theSocial and behavioural sciences labs rounded the campus visit.
In the afternoon the presidium gathered for their monthly meeting on campus. Its twelve members - led by President Professor Jörg Hacker - usually meet once every month to prepare and discuss all important decisions of the Academy.
Twice a year, this closed meeting is not held in Halle, the Leopoldina home, but at one of the universities or institutes of a member of the presidium. As one of the four vice presidents is Professor Dr. Ursula M. Staudinger, dean of the Jacobs University`s Jacobs Center of Lifelong Learning and Institutional Development, the presidium decided to hold its October meeting on autumnal Jacobs campus.
The German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina is the world’s oldest academy involved in natural sciences. It was founded in 1652 in the Free Imperial City of Schweinfurt. Since 1878, it has been seated in Halle on the Saale river. The Leopoldina was appointed Germany's National Academy of Sciences in July 2008. Scientists are elected members who represent subject areas corresponding to the Leopoldina’s section structure and who have distinguished themselves by demonstrating academic excellence.
