Physics Teaching Laboratories

Welcome to the web pages of Physics Teaching Labs!

The Physics Teaching Laboratories offer lab courses in Physics for undergraduate students at Jacobs University.

Laboratory courses are a fundamental part of any scientific education. Experiments have always been a great inspiration for developing new theories and are the ultimate test for any description of the world around us. To pose the right questions in the right way in an experiment one has to follow certain procedures established over the centuries, but at the same time one has to keep enough flexibility and creativity to cope with unexpected results and phenomena.

At Jacobs University the lab courses are designed that, starting with the first semester, students get hands-on experience on topics discussed in lectures; they help to link every day phenomena and experiments to their theoretical description; students get familiar with technical equipment, and learn to set-up, perform, and evaluate experiments in close interaction with instructors and teaching assistants.

Both, the Natural Science Labs in Physics (1st year) and the Advanced Physics Lab Courses (2nd year), offer experiments with increasing complexity to support and complement the topics taught in physics lectures. The Natural Science Labs in Physics introduce students to common laboratory equipment, procedures, and the scientific method, whereas Advanced Physics Labs are designed to deepen the technical and theoretical knowledge and to train students in the design of their own experiments.

Some more course details are given on the respective web pages.
