Beginning of the EU project eCUTE. The acronym stands for Education in Cultural Understanding, Technologically-Enhanced. Two new members have joined our laboratory so far, Dr. Eva Krumhuber and Aleksandra Swiderska.
Arvid Kappas took part in the German TV show "Die Grosse Show der Naturwunder" where he talked about felt and false smiles. More info here (show's webpage, German) and here (Arvid Kappas' personal webpage, English).

Mathias Theunis presented a poster titled "Loneliness, self-disclosure, and the social sharing of emotion: Why is the wish to belong not sufficient for interpersonal reconnection?" (Theunis, Kappas, & Rimé) at the 13th Annual Meeting of the Society for Personality and Social Psychology, San Diego, California. He also presented a poster within the CyberEmotions framework, titled "Emotion in computer-mediated-communication: A fine-grained perspective." (Theunis, Tsankova, Küster, & Kappas), at the 7th Emotion Pre-Conference to the SPSP Annual Meeting.

We maked the end of a very eventful and exciting semester with a little get-together at the lab.

Arvid Kappas provided a key note address at the 4th bi-annual International Conference of the HUMAINE Association on Affective Computing and Intelligent Interaction (ACII2011), held in Memphis, Tennessee.

Two members of our lab attended the 51st Annual Meeting of the Society for Psychophysiological Research in Boston, MA, USA. Dennis Küster presented a poster on "Bilateral plantar electrodermal activity elicited by contributing to online discussion forums: Do males and females recover asymmetrically?" (Küster, Kappas, Theunis, & Tsankova), and Arvid Kappas presented a poster titled "Cyberemotions: Subjective and physiological responses elicited by contributing to online discussion forums" (Kappas, Küster, Theunis, & Tsankova). This was the 25th SPR conference for Arvid Kappas, who serves also as a member of the program committee for the meeting.

The Cyberemotions members of our lab participated with two posters in the 7th Conference of the Media Psychology Division of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Psychologie which took place at Jacobs University Bremen, Germany. The poster titles are "Measuring cyberemotions: How do bodily responses relate to the digital world?" (Küster, Tsankova, Theunis, & Kappas), and "Avatars in a "nonymous" vs. anonymous online setting" (Vujović, Tsankova, Kappas, & Küster).

Arvid Kappas chaired a symposium on "Cyberemotions: Emotions in Cyberspace – Models and Empirical Approaches" at the International Society for Research on Emotions Conference in Kyoto, Japan. He also presented a talk titled "Reading or writing Internet contents in non-interactive settings triggers emotions: Changes in subjective experience, expression, and physiological activation" (Kappas, Küster, Theunis, & Tsankova).
Eva Krumhuber also attended the conference and gave a talk titled "Motion and emotion: What dynamic patterns reveal about emotion prototypes" (Krumhuber, Scherer, & Kappas) in a Symposium on "Advances in the study of facial expression of emotion".

Arvid Kappas and Dennis Küster attended a workshop of the CyberEmotions consortium at the Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule Zürich, Switzerland.

Arvid Kappas chaired a session on the topic "Getting to the Heart of the Digital: Automatic Analysis of Affect in Online Communication" where he also gave a talk titled "How Does the Digital World Link with the Heart? Of Human Emotions and Cyberemotions".

Marion G. Müller and Arvid Kappas will give a talk on the topic "Emotion, visuals, communication: Myths and truths, promises and pitfalls" at the ECREA Conference in Hamburg, Germany.
Arvid Kappas will present a poster entitled "CYBEREMOTIONS: SUBJECTIVE AND PHYSIOLOGICAL RESPONSES TO READING ONLINE DISCUSSION FORUMS" at the 50th Annual Meeting of the Society for Psychophysiological Research (SPR) in Portland, Oregon.
CyberEmotions workshop at École publique Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Switzerland
On September 1 a new EU funded project, eCUTE will commence with a kick-off workshop in Edinburgh at Heriot Watt University, hosted by Ruth Aylett, coordinator of the project. Arvid Kappas and Eva Krumhuber new member of our group will attend. More on eCUTE soon on these pages.
