Journey to New Worlds- A comparison between 19th Century Bremen Seabound Emmigrants to the New World and the Modern Day Journeys to the Unknown Realms of Outer Space

Readings, live music and historic exhibition by Barbara Ortwein.

The renowned author and historian, Barbara Ortwein, takes us on a fascinating journey back to the 19th century when young Capitan Wieting from Vegesack guided chartered sailing ships with German emigrants on daring transatlantic trips.
With the help of  Bremen's Burgermeister Schmidt, the emigration "Society of Noblemen",  sent many Bremen ships via Bremerhaven to Texas. The society's members sought to establish a "New Germany" in the "new world". The area where thousands of Germans settled in Texas is known today as the German Belt of Texas. The main locations are still today New Braunfels and Fredrichsburg.
Ms. Ortwein describes the challenging human situations facing the German emigrants on journeys led by Capitan Wieting to the unknown regions of a  far new world. She compares them to the fascinating modern day explorations and brave human space flight missions into outer space in search of new living spaces on other planets.

Save the date! It is an incredible piece of local history combined with the futuristic visions of 21st-century science.
Did you know that the very ground on which NASA stands in Houston, Texas where astronauts are trained was donated by Rice University, Rice University also founded the "International University Bremen" which now is known as Jacobs University?
