From the Lilienthal Observatory in Bremen, the senior civil servant and astronomer Johann Hieronymus Schroeter observed and studied the properties of the huge dark spots on the surface of the sun more than 200 years ago. Today, amateur astronomers are able to obtain high-resolution images of such sunspot groups, professional astronomers study their fine structures with ground-based large telescopes as well as from space and analyze the underlying physics. In this lecture fascinating sunspot images, as well as the results of model calculations and numerical simulations, are presented and the special importance of the gained knowledge for us humans is explained. This lecture, which is made particularly clear by a large number of illustrations and video sequences, begins with a theoretical examination of the observation possibilities of the dark, well-structured and developing spots on the surface of our "home star", the Sun.
