200th Anniversary of the Bremen Town Musicians
"Arrival of the Bremen Town Musicians Worls Stars in 3D?" - Professor Dr. Thomas Kreis
In his talk Professor Dr. Thomas Kreis poses the question, "When can we see the famous Bremen Town Musicians in 3 D?" In order to answer this question, Prof. Dr. Thomas Kreis will present already developed methods of stereoscopy for pseudo-three-dimensional television and cinema.
Prof. Kreis will also point out their basic shortcomings. Further concepts such as autostereoscopy, integral imaging, and volumetric imaging must be discussed before holography is treated as a promising method for three-dimensional TV and cinema. Even if holography overcomes the disadvantages over the other methods, it will still be shown that many scientific and technological problems remain to be solved before holographic screens become reality. But then even our Bremen Town Musicians can be experienced in 3D!
The presentation will take place on board the maritime Museum Schulschiff Deutschland docked in the Vegesack harbor near Havenhöövt with its spectacular view of the Weser and Lesum rivers which flow into the North Sea. The mystery of the story tale remains that the Bremen Town Musicians set out to reach Bremen but never actually arrived in the city. Now, using modern technology it may be possible to have them arrive holographically to celebrate their 200th anniversary!
The lecture will be bilingual with an English translation for students if needed.
About the speaker:
Prof. Kreis was born and grew up in Kassel, the city in which the Brothers Grimm lived from 1798 to 1840 (with short interruptions). During this period the two brothers Grimm collected and published the fairytale of the Bremen Town Musicians among many other tales. As a mathematician, engineer and prominent physicist, Prof. Dr. Kreis has been researching in the field of holography and its application in precision measurements as well as three-dimensional television since 1977. He has been conducting his research at the Bremen Institute for Applied Beam Technology (BIAS) since 1980 and has also been teaching physics at the University of Bremen since 2000.
About the series of lectures, "The Bremen Town Musicians in the Light of Culture, Science and World Peace":
This special anniversary lecture series on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the Bremen Town Musicians will be held from March to September 2019. The presentations by experienced artists, renowned scientists and researchers will take place at important historical sites in Bremen North on the banks of the Weser. The unique series opens a new and modern chapter about this internationally celebrated history that has made the UNESCO World Heritage city of Bremen famous. Bremen remains the city that still touches the hearts and minds of people all over the world through this popular fairytale of the Bremen Town Musicians.
