The Influence and Future of Ethnocentrism in Psychology

Ethnocentrism is a social psychological construct concerned with the view that one's own ethnic group or culture is very important - more so than any other. Since the nineteenth century, social scientists have recognized that ethnocentric bias is one of the most important biases that affects a study of social and psychological phenomena. Although psychologists have studied ethnocentrism for a long time, there has been much less work on how ethnocentrism affects psychology. In this talk, I argue that ethnocentrism still deeply affects a study of psychology at many levels: the topics of study, theoretical frameworks, choice of methods, such as participants, materials, and procedures, representations of the history of psychology, scientific social networks, psychological institutions, citation patterns, and validation of existing social structures. I will also discuss a possible future of a non-ethnocentric psychology, alongside societal, institutional, and individual barriers to such a psychology.
