Prof. Dr. Sebastian Springer,  Professor of Biochemistry and Cell Biology, Focus Area: Health - Life Sciences & Chemistry, Jacobs University Bremen gGmbH / 28759 Bremen / Germany

will give a talk entitled:

From Basic Research to Tumor Diagnostics

part 2:      The Transfer to Industry and what we learned

In 2012, when following our curiosity, my group discovered how to modify our favorite protein molecule such that it was unusually stable and resistant to spontaneous decay. We later realized that this invention could be used to improve the detection and - in the future perhaps - the strengthening of the natural immune response against tumors, so we secured the intellectual property and set up a company.

The second presentation focuses on the transfer: securing the intellectual property, negotiating license contracts, deciding to set up a company and doing it; I'll tell about some painful experiences; and I'll try and summarize what we have learnt, especially that funding for basic science is essential for transferring results to, and working with, industry.

All are kindly welcome!
