Jacobs University student Georgiana Ciobotaru has been honored with a science award by the OLB Foundation. She received the prize in recognition of her bachelor thesis in logistics.
February 6, 2015Together with seven other young scientists from the region, Georgiana Ciobotaru was awarded a third prize of €2.500 for her bachelor thesis on the topic of the restructuring of distribution networks in humanitarian logistics with a focus on the concept of “freight villages”.
The 22-year-old from Romania is currently studying for a master degree in International Logistics: Management and Engineering [1] at Jacobs University after finishing her undergraduate studies here in the same field.
In her thesis, she analyzed the possibility of transferring a commercial logistics concept to humanitarian logistics, in order to improve the relief chains and the collaboration among humanitarian organizations.
Georgiana Ciobotaru joined winners from regional universities such as the Carl von Ossietzky University Oldenburg, the Jade Hochschule Oldenburg, the University of Bremen and the University Osnabrück.
At the awards ceremony held at the Theater Laboratorium in Oldenburg, Karin Katerbau, Chair of the Board of the OLB Foundation, handed over a total of €24,500 to the winners. She told the awardees: “Many important scientists originate from the North-western part of Germany. With tonight’s achievements you have also contributed to the standing of our science region,” said Ms. Katerbau.
The diversity of ideas and topics stood out at this year’s event with different fields of studies being represented such as production technology, physics, biology, architecture, cognitive science, logistics and linguistics. This diversity was exemplary for the many facets of the universities in the region, Ms. Katerbau added. “Science and research within the region are very much future-oriented,” she said.
The science award is presented bi-annually to graduates from state-accredited universities in the North-west region, whose theses were adjudged by their universities as outstanding. An independent jury of scholars then evaluated the bachelor and master theses.
The prize has first been awarded fourteen years ago, by the Foundation of the Oldenburgische Landesbank (OLB). Since then prize money of more than 180,000 Euro has been bestowed upon more than 50 awardees.
