Around 300 guests from politics, academia and business attended the unifreunde New Year’s Reception at the end of January. The festive event celebrating Bremen’s science landscape and honoring Jacobs University and the University of Bremen is traditionally held at the Obere Rathaushalle.
January 30, 2015Prof. Dr. Bengt Beutler, Chairman of the unifreunde, introduced the speakers of the evening. Referring to the10th anniversary of Bremen as a City of Science he gave an overview of the success of Bremen as a science location and as a cosmopolitan open-minded city.
Representing the Bremen Senate on the night, State Council Gerd-Rüdiger Kück highlighted the importance of all science institutions for Bremen’s economy and job market and called for the science institutions to cooperate to make the best possible use of scientific competence.
Referring to Jacobs University as a continuous place of inspiration, internationality and interculturality, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Katja Windt, President of Jacobs University, detailed the successful realignment of the private university. She looked back at the many changes undertaken on campus over the course of the last year referring amongst others to the introduction of three new focus areas – Diversity, Health and Mobility – in both research and teaching and the restructuring of study programs in undergraduate and graduate education. With a view to the year ahead she said: “In 2015 it will continue to be worthwile for our partners to look at Jacobs University. We will further strengthen the science location and remain a reliable cooperation partner.”
Finishing the official part, Prof. Dr. Bernd Scholz-Reiter, Rector of the University of Bremen, told the audience of successful activities within research and teaching at his university and described the role the institution is playing for Bremen. His speech was followed by an introduction of new faculty members at the University of Bremen. An informal gathering with a chance for guests to talk and have a fruitful exchange rounded off the evening.
About the unifreunde
The ‘unifreunde’ [1]is a Bremen-based association founded in 1961 to foster the development of universities and science in Bremen. As a prolific fundraiser and providing a platform for networking, the ’unifreunde’ hold a number of activities throughout the year ranging from the News Year’s Reception to special lectures and the awarding of the Bremer Studienpreis.
