The promises and challenges of affective computing: The case of EMOTE

The EU-funded EMOTE project (www.emote-project.eu) will be presented. The goal of EMOTE is the development of empathic robot tutors for school-children. I will discuss the work done in the last three years with a specific focus on the work achieved at Jacobs University in that time period and then embed this research in the larger context of Affective Computing (AC) and highlight some of the exciting developments relating to promises and challenges in this interdisciplinary field. AC deals with developing IT solutions that try to simulate, model, or display emotions, as well as trying to detect/diagnose human emotions. Recently, AC has been associated with serious investments in IT developments as it is believed that it will play an important role in Human Machine Interaction in general, and specifically in fields, such as Industry 4.0 or entertainment.
