Invitation to the Computational Biology Colloqiuim
held by:
Prof. Dr. Gail ter Haars , The Institute of Cancer Research, London, UK
Title of the talk:
High intensity focused ultrasound for cancer therapy. Thermal, mechanical & immunological effects
Ultrasound is an extremely versatile form of energy. It can be used not only for diagnostic imaging, but also for the deliberate induction of biological effects that can be harnessed for therapeutic benefit. In this talk, a brief overview of therapeutic ultrasound devices will be given, together with a description of the thermal and mechanical effects that are currently be investigated for their potential applicability in cancer therapy. Thermal ablation, hyperthermia, and cavitation based treatments will be described, and their potential to modify the immune response will be discussed.
