Katiuscia Vaccarini is a PhD student from University of Macerata in Italy. She is visiting us (April-December 2015) within a PhD double-degree project between her original university and Jacobs University Bremen.

She is currently researching in the discipline area of International Business (IB) in the context of Sino-European foreign direct investment. Next to her primary research area she draws also on Social Psychology (e.g. social interactions, groups and communication).

Her focus is on managers’ perceptions of distance between their home country (location of the headquarter) and host country (location of the investment abroad). She explores the concept of “psychic distance” - and related issues, such as “cultural differences” - in business settings. This seminar highlights the psychic distance construct, its 12 sub-dimensions and how managers perceive these distances between their home and host countries. She also investigates the impact that psychic distance has on their businesses.

Several questions will be answered: what is the role of psychic distance in the context of foreign direct investments? Which are the most important sub-dimensions of the construct? Do psychic distance perceptions vary over time, from before entering the market and after the foreign market-entry? To what extent do they change and along which dimensions? Do “previous experiences” moderate managers’ psychic distance perceptions? Answers and implications will be discussed.
