Prof. Dr. Arvid Kappas, Dean

Prof. Dr. Arvid Kappas was appointed Dean in June 2014. He is responsible for the entire Graduate and Executive Education, as well as the focus area DIVERSITY (in modern societies). Arvid Kappas is an internationally renowned expert in the psychology of emotions.
 
In August 2013 he was elected as President of the “International Society for Research on Emotions” (ISRE). He obtained his PhD at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire (USA) in 1989, after finishing his studies in Psychology with a “Diplom” from Justus-Liebig University, Gießen.
 
From 1992 to 2001, Prof. Dr. Kappas worked as Assistant and Associate Professor at Laval University in Quebec City, Quebec (Canada). During this period he was also visiting professor at University of Rome “La Sapienza” and Salzburg University in 1999. After a Senior Lecturer position at the University of Hull, he was appointed Professor of Psychology at Jacobs University in 2003. Prof. Dr. Kappas was jointly responsible for coordinating the study program “Integrated Social and Cognitive psychology” and the planning Jacobs University’s laboratories for the social and behavioral sciences.
 
In 2006 and 2012 he was honored by Jacobs University students with the “Teaching Award” for his extraordinary achievements in education.
 
Prof. Dr. Kappas’ multidisciplinary research projects interconnect Psychology and Psychophysiology with Computer Science and Engineering and are being funded by the European Union amongst others.
 
His most recent projects include research on collective emotions in e-communities, as well as research on a new generation of empathic robotic tutors in the classroom.
 
He has been the head of the Change Team “Academic Programs and Research”. Together with colleagues he developed the new focus area DIVERSITY (in modern societies), which he is now responsible for as Dean.
