„The Future in our Hands” – this is the motto of the third Art Fest, which will take place on campus at Jacobs University next April. By now, artists from Bremen, Germany and all over the world are invited to submit artworks on this theme. Paintings, installations, short films, dance performances and theater plays – all forms of art are welcome. Submissions are accepted until 28 February 2020.

What are the consequences that our current actions have on our future? This important question will be examined in the context of the upcoming Art Fest. Since 2017, committed students of Jacobs University have been organizing the yearly exhibition. It is intended to be an open forum for art in all its manifestations. The theme changes every year, but one thing always remains the same: the great scope for interpretation.

“Our global community is currently facing a lot of challenges, which will have an impact on our future. We would like to encourage artists to critically reflect on these problems in their art”, says Andrea Pin Morales, one of the main organizers of the Art Fest. It is up to the artists themselves how they want approach this topic. Climate change, wars or the plastic flood – there are many sources of inspiration. The defining feature is, that the Art Fest’s theme is recognizable in each artwork, since the student selection committee attaches great importance to that. “We want to create an event that is not only aesthetically appealing but also intellectually and emotionally engaging”, explains Andrea, who is studying Industrial Engineering and Management at Jacobs University.

The jury received around 140 applications in the context of the last Art Fest. More than half of the artworks were submitted by artists who are not part of the Jacobs community. This time, the selection committee also expects to receive numerous applications. There is no upper limit for the artworks on display: the more suitable artworks submitted, the more exhibits will be on display at the exhibition in April 17 and 18, 2020. “The Art Fest 2020 aims to be a voice for the voiceless, a space for the restless, and a canvas for our future”, says Adriana Martinez Borjas, second main organizer and student of International Business Administration. “Our team is looking forward to your submissions.”
